Thank you, thank you == .bashrc was stopping
 and starting gpm for $USER root -- which 
 caused the freeze up. Others comment about X
and gpm conflicting; my errors cause conflict,
not gpm

I'll have to re-post, research to answer this:
Where do I add this statement in init.d to set
up the modem on bootup, before gpm?
"setserial -q /dev/ttyS2 port 3 port 0x03e8 irq 3"

..and thanks again. The mass of possibilities had
fogged the simple check of config files/their actions.
