I'll have to disagree.

e2fsck will tell you if there are any inconsistancies on your
filesystem.  It doesn't do a physical check of the drive itself, or
test read/write to sectors.  The proper tool for the latter is
badblocks, unfortunately, the write version of this test is destructive
-- it will destroy both filesystems and cntents on your disk, requiring
that you back up the data on it before running it, and restore the data
afterwards.  This may not be a bad idea in any event on a drive
beginning to show signs of failure.

Many professional system administrators strongly recommend replacing
hard drives at the first sign of failure.   This may be overkill, but
given the relative values of hardware to data contained, it probably
makes a lot of sense.

Other recommendations on hardware testing appreciated.
