Hi Al Ma,

to be honest: I don't really care, which version of a specific (LaTeX) package I do package. Once a specific package version has made its way to CTAN, I assume that the TeX Live people will pick it up and I'll package it later on. Looking at the tar ball....

hille42@hz:~/devel/TeXLive/zzz_upstream_raw/ctan.mirror.norbert-ruehl.de/archive$ ls -l *newtx.*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 hille42 hille42 1053468 Aug 26 23:46 newtx.doc.r68071.tar.xz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 hille42 hille42 23 Aug 26 23:46 newtx.doc.tar.xz -> newtx.doc.r68071.tar.xz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 hille42 hille42 6792716 Aug 26 23:46 newtx.r68071.tar.xz
lrwxrwxrwx 1 hille42 hille42 19 Aug 26 23:46 newtx.tar.xz -> newtx.r68071.tar.xz

...I used for creating the deb package I know that it is dated August 2023 and I'd assume that it is the latest version from CTAN [1] however I didn't check that.

I now checked the file versions of the CTAN package and compared to the file versions in Debian and they are identical. So, we look at v1.726 in Debian. Yes, the statements \fileversion{1.723} and \fileversion{1.724} in the sty files are not very helpful, but this is now my fault.

Thank you for a quick answer. Note that the version of the package
NewTX (most likely, 1.726 (cf. https://ctan.org/pkg/newtx), since all
the mentioned bugs are repaired, whereas it was not the case for a
few immediately preceeding versions) deviates from the version of the
file newtx.sty (namely, still 1.724). My question concerns the
version of the whole NewTX package and not the versions of the
constituent files. (Since you wrote that the present bug report
1051497 is repaired, I highly believe you that you put 1.726 into
texlive-fonts-extra, and what I'd like to know is how to check this
in the future.)
