I guess there might have been a temporary shortage in /tmp or /var. The
update you are talking about also brought in a new texlive-extra*, which
easily eats a few Gb, plus the temp unpacked directory, so all in all it
can be on the limit of your /var size. But hard to say ....

And it is nothing *we* can influence, this is either dpkg domain, or
your setup.
