This issue seems to be solved for me. It took a while for me to find an
example, as most pdf documentation are installed uncompressed currently,
but then I found:

hille@sid:~ $ texdoc -l ifsym
 1 /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/doc/fonts/ifsym/ifsym.ps.gz
Enter number of file to view, RET to view 1, anything else to skip: h

...and the document opens fine using "texdoc ifsym" using gv a viewer.
If we need pdf to reproduce the problem, then it got solved by
installing pdf uncompressed.

Can we close the issue?

Thanks,
  Hilmar
