I did wonder about that, especially /tmp/. I did check dmesg after the run/crash but there didn't seem to be anything relevant there. Main space has 158GB free, but /tmp is on RAM: # findmnt /tmp TARGET SOURCE FSTYPE OPTIONS /tmp tmpfs tmpfs rw,nosuid, nodev with (by default) 7.8GB free. This machine has 16GB of RAM, and I think the tmpfs can use up to 50%, but I might be wrong about that. >From the debug messages with -D10 on dpkg, there were a vast number of files being, was it "deferred", and I did wonder whether those entries were going on a stack somewhere which might have overflowed? As a temporary fix, I tried "holding" texlive-fonts-extra, but that didn't work out, so I removed it, and then completed the apt-get upgrade. I marked some of the dependent packages manually for install which all wnet through smoothly. But obviously I would like the package back. Just a quick reply: out of time this morning, but hope to reload etc later today. Thanks for prompt reply, ael
