building biber.pdf

I am trying to update biber in Debian, but I realized that building
biber.pdf from biber.tex is, well, not really working ;-)

* the header
	\pdfminorversion=4
  does not work for xelatex
* there are many errors about missing $ around \checkmark
* even after adding them, still errors:
! Extra }, or forgotten $.
<recently read> \egroup

(many of them)

Could you please tell me *how* you build the biber.pdf file?
