That is due to auto-detection of awk in the configure script.
I had to build several other packages in a chroot and had gawk installed
there.
I have already a package in testing that changes that to
awk_binary="awk"
by setting
AWK=awk ./configure ...
and have changed the dep from gawk to awk.
That should do it.

Indeed, that is what I do.
