I didn't see anything running in the background. I also doubt that
this is the reason, because xetex on linux will not call
fc-cache, right? 

Looking at the run time it seems that the time for each page is getting
longer and longer.

I got a similar bug report now for LaTeX - which I couldn't reproduce
by now. I guess I have to write to Khaled.
