The poppler source contains:

(in poppler/GfxFont.cc), and in poppler/Error.h:

  errSyntaxWarning,    // PDF syntax error which can be worked around;
                       //   output will probably be correct

So, it really is a "PDF syntax error", not a limitation in poppler.
