I am getting a similar effect, but in my case the locale is $ cat /etc/default/locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 Also, I have neither ada-mode nor maplev installed. I attach copies of the dir file before running update-info-dir, and after. Search for 'epix' to find the broken part.
