Dear Frank,

I am very grateful for your quick answer, and I confirm that this work on your
test file on my system, but it does not work with my file:

$ cat plaintest.tex
\ifx\pdfoutput\undefined
\else
   \pdfoutput = 1
\fi
hallo
\bye

But this is probably a bug in my file and not with pdftex.
