You could also use
\tracingall
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\newglossaryentry{N}{name={N}, description={N}}
\begin{document}
$\gls{N}_{\gls{N}}$
\end{document}

and compile the file in /tmp (so that we have a common directory). The
log will be very large, but it can be compared easily to see at which it
differs.

pdflatex makes Julian-style output, latex+dvips makes Jaakov-style
output at my home.

You could also use only the pdf output, which frankly, is better.
