hi,

from latex.info.gz (via "info latex"):

===
   The `itemize' environment uses the `itemi' through `itemiv' counters
(*note Counters::.). The type of numbering can be changed by redefining
`\theitemi' etc.
===

however, \theitemi and others do not exist! took me about 15 minutes
of head scratching and then some googling to discover that they
are infact \labelitemi etc, not \theitemi etc.

that is:

\renewcommand{\theitemi}{$\star$}

will not work, and should instead be

\renewcommand{\labelitemi}{$\star$}

hth,
	sean

Bad news: the bug is not fixed in Debian stable. In Debian unstable
(TL 2009) the latex.info page is simply gone, hence the bug is
"fixed". Removing broken docs is an acceptable solution IMHO.

-> Closing.
