That works too.

However, it would be much easier to distinguish warnings and errors if they actually would have some unique identifier.

As it is now fmtutil will search lines that start with '! ' (applies to warnings and errors) and will return exit code different than 0, claiming that there is "a potential error" in the format files.

I'd reckon the easiest way to change this would be to patch tex macros to output unique formatted warnings and patch fmtutil to react accordingly.
