Indeed, there is (still, sigh) a problem. But I'm not sure that it's
still the same.

The difference to earlier "incarnations" of the problem is that back
then, pdfxmltex worked, while now both fail. What a progress...

That shouldn't matter at all, since it's all about processing ASCII
files.

That sounds reasonable. However, either hardlz anyone is using xmltex -
otherwise the problem wouldn't have rotten in the BTS for 6 years. Or it
actually occurs only in special circumstances. 


Anyway, I tried to reduce the Sample xml source until the error
dissappears, but it doesn't. It doesn't seem to have any connections to
actually using itemize:

If I press ENTER twice, I do get a dvi file which looks odd, it's
attached: There's a line which might separate the page header from the
body, then comes the text

in small type and then in large sans-serif type

At this point, we need an expert in xmltex or fo processing or whatever;
none among the maintainers is one, I think.
