Installing xetex from SVN alongside texlive_2007-14

Dear Folks,

On my Kubuntu Hardy (8.04 LTS) system, I have installed texlive_2007-14 compiled 
with prevu using the Ubuntu/Debian package sources for texlive-base_2007-14 etc.

I now need to use a more recent version of xetex/xelatex, and have downloaded 
the TRUNK using svn from the xetex repository.

How should I compile and install this downloaded xetex so that it can peacefully 
co-exist alongside my texlive installation, without disrupting anything but 
allowing the latest xetex and its support files to be used, instead of those 
from texlive, when necessary?
