Will Dan's suggestion not make everbody happy? The original problem
seemed to be that the a0 paper size was too small for large EPS files.
Specifying a nearly infinite size as above would avoid this.

It isn't marked as a conffile in the package, and it's not in /etc,
so it will need a bit more than just documentation.
