Waiting in the background until dpkg.lock is removed might indeed be an
alternative.  To make sure dpkg knows that configuring failed, one could
call "dpkg-reconfigure $known-to-fail-package". 

Not that I think we will have time to implement this soon, but if
someone else wants to implement a patch...  I'm forwarding this to the
bug, just in case.
