I tried the same, with only packages from tug.org (not my newly built
texlive-bin packages).  I used dselect, and I ran into the same problem
you described below for apt-get:

And used the same solution.

After that, there are still directories and formats
/var/lib/texmf/web2c/<engine>, but they do not interfere with teTeX's
workings.


Anyway, I don't think we should bother much about that.  As soon as
TeXlive 2007 is in unstable, there is no way back downgrading to
teTeX-3.0, and those who install from experimental and want to go back
later should be able to handle this.
