Are you sure this is a MetaPost problem? Here, with texlive-metapost
version 2007-12.np.etch.1, including the compiled figure in a LaTeX
document processed by pdfTeX works fine. So, I'd say the problem is in
the conversion by a2ping, not in MetaPost.
