Bug#396322: [AMS Technical Support] re: amslatex/3896: Layout change in amsthm 2.20: Intended or regression?

So the message is that this change is intended, but it's going to be
documented in the next version

frank,
the change to amsthm by which the optional theorem
name (in [] brackets) was set in lightface type
(rather than bold like the rest of the header) was
made to conform to ams journal style. failure to
document the change is the real bug.

a planned (but not yet scheduled) update will provide
a built-in mechanism for changing this default without
requiring a \newtheoremstyle to be defined. the
documentation will be updated as well.

Description:
Description of bug:
This has been reported by a Debian user as
http://bugs.debian.org/396322:

********************
Im using amsthm for creating theorems etc. Now one can give a Name to
a theorem in []-Brackets (see example). If I compile it on a sarge
system with older amsthm.sty then it was created right (with the name
also in boldface). If I crate it hiere with amsthm.sty with Version
"2004/08/06" then the Theoremname wasn't show anymore in bold.

The line following line in amsthm.sty is causing this new "behavior"?
\thm@notefont{\fontseries\mddefault\upshape}%

Is it possible as wish, to revert this to the old behavior?
********************

Of course it is possible to change the appearance, using
\newtheoremstyle. However, this is a change that affects existing
documents (note that "a sarge system" implies teTeX 2.0.2). I'm
wondering whether this was intended, or an unwanted regression? In any
case, it should be documented.

Postscript files showing old and new behavior are given at the URL
above. The problem is easily reproducible when switching from teTeX
2.0.2 to 3.0. If you need logfiles, just ask

How-To-Repeat:
Sample file which indicates the problem:

[by the way, a much smaller sample file would show
the problem just as well]
