I'm sorry. My first try was to call pdfnup this way:
hille@szyslak:~$ pdfnup svn-book.pdf
This is pdfnup version 1.20
Processing svn-book.pdf...
Temporary LaTeX file for this job is /var/tmp/50023270430499-1.tex
Calling pdflatex...
Finished: output is /home/hille/svn-book-2x1.pdf
svn-book.pdf is the SVN book. Do I need a special pdf file to cause
the fault? Which options did you use?

Weird. pdfLaTeX when be called from the command line directly works,
right?

The version of libpoppler0c2 in unstable is actually 0.4.5-5. Does
downgrading to the official version solve your problem?
