Work on the test-bed? A testing system for new versions would be good.
Comparing the dvi output of the old and new version etc, the pdf
versions, too. There is some work in the svn repos, taken from the
TeXlive depot.
The students would need to learn quite some basic tools, scripting, file
format knowledge (digging into dvi format, pdf format?).
But any other suggestion is welcome, too.
