Do you activate portuguese hyphenation patterns? Are there any error
messages/warnings? Do you use T1 font encoding?

Why do you think it is related to UTF-8 encoding? How do you enable
UTF-8 encoding?

Please provide a *minimal* example file. One paragraph of text and just
the bare minimum of packages in the preamble necessary to reproduce the
