Bug#354001: tetex-bin: fmtutil-sys fails to process amslatex.ini and mullatex.ini:

retitle 354001 mullatex incompatible with bulgarian hyphenation patterns
reassign 354001 multex-bin
severity 354001 serious
clone 354001 -1
retitle -1 needs increased pattern_memory
thanks

That means that mullatex loads LaTeX's language.dat in which it
encounters problems with the bulgarian patterns. This is new in
teTeX-3.0, since the patterns weren't available in 2.0.2 IIRC.

I assume the problems have to do with encoding, catcodes or similar, and
since mullatex.ltx does nothing special in this respect before \input
latex.ltx, it's a incompatibility between bulgarian patterns and the
multex binary. Whether this can be fixed in the source I don't know.
If not, it's easily fixed by installing a special language.dat file in
/usr/share/texmf/multex/generic/config/ (or multex/latex/config if only
mullatex is supposed to use it).

But once that is done, there's a second problem which existed also in
sarge:

(/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/generic/hyphen/eehyph.tex
! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [pattern memory=65535].
l.1163 i4ga4g

If you really absolutely need more capacity,
you can ask a wizard to enlarge me.

I tried to work around this by increasing trie_size, but this is already
at 270000 so it cannot be what TeX is running into (65535). I fear this
is hardcoded in the sources:

,---- tex.web
| {Larger values than 65536 cause the arrays consume much more memory.}
| @d ssup_trie_opcode == 65535
`----

But the obvious alternative is to strip down language.dat even more -
it's not very probable that a user will want lots of european and
african languages together with multex, will it? With this minimal
language.dat:

# egrep -v '^%|^$' `kpsewhich --progname=multex language.dat`
american ushyph1.tex
=USenglish
=english
nohyphenation zerohyph.tex

it works fine. Users can always add languages and put the changed file
into /etc/texmf/multex/ (or /etc/texmf/multex/latex if only mullatex is
supposed to use that file)
