Actually, when I wrote "reasons for the soname change" what I really
meant was "reason for changing the name of the -dev library by adding
the soname number".  

And yes, Olaf gave a reason; I think it was even on this list, or on
tetex-pretest:  Because there is no defined API and the library was
never designed to be used as a DLL, he wanted to be sure, although he
couldn't tell at which places compatibility was or might be broken.
There'll be a properly designed libkpse "soon".

I wanted to dig out that statement and put it into README.Debian.
