Thanks for the FAQ pointer! The upshot seems to be that due to
encoding problems etc., quote from the FAQ:

   the only solution is to view the 'original' metapost output after
   processing through LaTeX and dvips.


So it can't be done in xdvi either, and it seems we should go for
displaying bounding boxes instead - Paul?
