Would be nice, but not strictly necessary.

Unlikely.

ACK

Obviously, I am not sure about this. Let's say I want to install the
'bera' fonts from TeX Live, since they are not in teTeX. AFAIK I would
have to install the 'texlive-fontsextra' package for this. Looking at
the tpm-file for this collection, I see several fonts that are both in
texlive-fontsextra and in (future) tetex-extra: antt, bbm, bbold,
belleek, cmbright, doublestroke, eulervm, fpl, rsfs (the latter two
should be in tetex-base since they are part of PSNFSS) and sauter. I
might have overlooked some. Similar for texlive-latexextra which
contains many interesting things but also, eg, beton, ccaption,
currvita, dinbrief, dk-bib, enumitem, soul, ... all of which are also in
tetex. I am sure I have missed quite a few.

I could imagine to put nothing from texlive-fontsextra and
texlive-latexextra into tetex-base (fpl and rsfs are tricky then). In
that case, those two packages could be installed /instead/ of
tetex-extra. But installing instead of tetex-extra is not a good
solution since there are many more things in there.

I don't know if their is a good solution to install these
packages in addition to tetex-extra. At least if we don't want to
introduce separate TEXMF trees and live with a slight duplication of
files.

In principle, this is soemthing that I would be willing to do. But I
won't have much time in the near future .
