I think wasting your time with teTeX 2 compatibility is only worth it if
you want to support users of stable who won't use the teTeX 3 backports
(once these are available). Surely, you can hack teTeX 2 support, but
doing it really correctly (in a Policy-compliant way) is a pain and will
pollute your maintainer scripts. Your choice.
