It does not sound very encouraging. poppler provides a static
libxpdf.a too. Perhaps we could try to adapt teTeX to use that lib.
Yes this is a lot of work and we have to reapply it after every teTeX
release as I don't believe it will be accepted in upstream.
I had only a short look at the build system and there are more than 2
screws to turn.
