I doubt that this is the reason. Jörg's error message was:
(/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/psnfss/pifont.sty
! LaTeX Error: Encoding scheme `U' unknown.
when pifont.sty says "\fontencoding{U}". This fontenconding is defined
in the LaTeX kernel (fontmath.ltx), and it must be there.
Something went severely wrong with format creation; however I don't
think it's worth debugging this unless Jörg has added a proper
TEXMFSYSVAR to his TEXMF variable.
