If the files are just plain dpkg conffiles (and I see no reason why they
shouldn't be), they are preserved - or rather if the file changes in the
package, the usual dpkg dialog is displayed. No problem here.

I also had this idea. But if you do it, please start from revision 63
in the SVN repository which I just checked in - it contains many
improvements that we already had in update-updmap and which I somehow
lost when moving the file from tetex-bin to tex-common.
