As a workaround, change /etc/texmf/fmt.d/40jadetex.cnf so that it reads:
# jadefmtutil.cnf: configuration file for fmtutil; jade flavor.
# invoke with 'fmtutil --cnffile <file>'
#
# format engine pattern-file arguments
jadetex pdfetex language.dat &latex jadetex.ini
pdfjadetex pdfetex language.dat &pdflatex pdfjadetex.ini
This is not the same as suggested in the patch to #298437. In order to
make the version from the patch sufficient, you additionally need to do
# ln -s pdfetex /usr/bin/etex
which I will do in the next upload of tetex-bin.
