The problem was reproducable under certain circumstances. If my powerbook was running for some hours under a 2.4 kernel it started to show symptoms like discribed above. One time I did a heavy compilation and gcc segfaulted. In the tetex-case obviously fmtutil produced a high enough load to provoke this symptom. It was the first occurence and reproducability was bad since my PB was not running long enough most times. And then I did not associate these occurrences. The tetex-thing was reproducable since it was the highest load I produced during this time and I took care about it mostly in the evenings. The whole stuff went away since I updated to kernel 2.6.
