please build format, which uses texinfo.tex

Package: texinfo
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

in debian-teTeX-maint we had a discussion, why tetex-base depends on
texinfo. The answer was, that in fmtutil.cnf is an entry for a
special format, which needs texinfo.tex for building, but texinfo.tex
is splitted off to texinfo in Debian. Hence the former maintainer of
teTeX just declared a Dep on texinfo (#61990).
Our idea was now, that this entry in fmtutil.cnf could be swapped
over to texinfo. All, you'd have to do, is to drop a file called e.g.
10texinfo.cnf in /etc/texmf/fmt.d/ containing:
#! cyrtexinfo	tex		language.dat	cyrtxinf.ini
(the entry in question). Yes -- it is commented, which is the default.
We would leave a comment in 00tetex.cnf, that the entry has moved to
texinfo.
Then you'd have to check for the existence of /usr/bin/fmtutil and
/usr/sbin/update-fmtutil in your postinst and call then first
update-fmtutil and after that "fmtutil --missing" if both exist.
In postinst (perhaps) you should remove
/var/lib/texmf/web2c/cyrtexinfo.fmt during purge.
If tetex-bin will be installed after texinfo it will call
update-fmtutil, create fmtutil.cnf and create that format if the
entry is not commented.
What do you think about that idea?

Regards,
  Hilmar
