Actually, the workaround is:

  GS_OPTIONS="-dAutoRotatePages=/None" epstopdf cm_test.eps

otherwise, you get an ugly error from gs.

I would also like to point out that the epstopdf in woody doesn't have
this problem because an equivalent (one-line!) patch was applied to it
(see bug #131570).

So, the current situation is:
  - epstopdf in sid is buggy, but just like everywhere;
  - epstopdf in sid behaves differently than in woody.

Unfortunately, there is no good solution except having the bug fixed
upstream...
