How do the original sources files look like? Have e.g. a look at e.g.
charter.map.

When catting indeed the lines look quite good, except that they are
colored. In /usr/bin/updmap (catMaps()) the map files seem simply
cat'ed to the term and then concatenated. Do you have some others
colors on your terminal than the normal white? Does resetting that,
to the default help you?
