Bug#184875: (fwd) Bug#184875: tetex-bin: dvips -Ppdf won't work at all

Hello Hilmar, Silas, Tim,

    1. Create a mf-mode with that resolution.

I will add a mode for 8000 dpi to the next modes.mf.
I didn't know config.pdf did this.

    2. Use another mode with a smaller resolution, e.g. 600 dpi, like you
did using -D600. However that will give more worse results.

Other possible resolutions:
-mode ultre -D 1200
-mode linolttz -D 3386

There will still be Type3-fonts in that file, which will look ugly.

xpdf seems to do ok with Type 3 fonts these days, at least the ones I've
seen. I hear the latest acrobat is improved, too.

Meanwhile, another whole approach would be to use pdf(la)tex directly,
instead of dvips -Ppdf. Then it is the pk_resolution value in
pdftex.cfg which controls things, but to my knowledge pdftex doesn't
autocreate fonts, so I end up running dvips once to generate the fonts,
pdftex thereafter.

Of course there are many documents (like those using pstricks) where
pdftex can't be used, but when it can, it may give better results than
dvi -> ps -> pdf.

HTH.
