Could it have been, that you had libkpathsea-perl installed, which
indeed gets segfault and don't work very well. The packager of
libkpathsea-perl stated, that he disabled the Perl replacement
scripts for the time being (after woody). That might be the reason,
that it works actually.
If this is the case please reassign to libkpathsea-perl and lower the
Severity.
