Neither do I and I agree with you, that adding more dependencies is
not desirable. BTW: the package mime-support is not that huge.

Hmmm. That makes to me more sense when e.g. selecting different
incarnations of vi, not when to select the viewer of a special
mime-type. Appendix F does not belong to the policy, meanwhile
Chapter 10 says, that mime-types should be used.
Any opinions out there in debian-tetex-maint? Do exist there a
consense, which method to use?
