installing the Culmus fonts

Hi

Culmus is a set of Type1 fonts. It has been a debian package for some 
time now.

I would like to be able to install the Culmus fonts (from the package 
culmus) for use with tetex (actually: with ivritex).

One procedural question: who is "responsible" for making the fonts 
available under the texmf tree, or otherwise available to TeX?

Is it by symlinks? Any better way? And is it the "responsibility' or 
culmus? or is a separate [sub]package needed?

Is there any other tex fonts package that is independent of the "main" 
tex packages and whose fonts are not originally used for TeX?
