Bug#183845: tetex-bin: texconfig hangs forever in postinst with defunct child

You would think so.  But the environment of the shell from which I did
"su" did not have any of the variables set that texconfig was
complaining about.  Neither does the su shell look like it has any of
these variables set.  Nevertheless, as soon as I changed from using "su"
to "su -" the postinst no longer hung.  So how do you explain that? 
Maybe it is not wrong TeX environment settings, but rather some other
unexpected envrionment settings that later lead to these variables being
set incorrectly by one of TeX's configuration routines (either
maintainer script or upstream routine).
