I was going to report this as a bug myself. Tetex-base still uses type 3 fonts by default as of tetex-base 2.0.2-5.1. Even if there is a very good reason not to use type 1 fonts by default, the user should at least be given that option, and prompted accordingly, by the configuration script. Congratulations and thanks are due to Debian for what is an excellent set of tetex packages.
