That was the intention at one point in time...

The situation re boxes.mp is indeed unfortunate, as is the fact that your
more recent copy of boxes.mp seems to be nowhere on CTAN. Is it part of a
recent teTeX?

In addition, graphics/metapost/metapost.tar.gz is mirrored daily from

  ftp://netlib.bell-labs.com/netlib/research/metapost.tar.Z

which is supposed to be the canonical source.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't have time to trace the different versions
of boxes.mp. I'm considering moving systems/msdos/metapost to
obsolete/systems.

CTAN is slowly changing into a repository of obsolete software, I fear.
