I was seeing exactly the same symptoms one one of my machines going
from 1.0.2+20021025-7 to 2.0.1-2. Removing (but not purging)
tetex-{base,bin,extra} and related dependencies, then reinstalling
them fixed the problem, with the following oddity: I was asked about
two conffiles on reinstallation that I wasn't asked about on upgrade.
They were:
/etc/texmf/texmf.d/85Misc.cnf
/etc/texmf/texmf.d/95NonPath.cnf
I don't remember having ever altered those files, and I replaced them
on reinstallation.
