Still no joy here on powerpc; it hangs in uniq. This may be of interest, though: "/usr/bin/updmap: line 622: /web2c/mktexdir: No such file or directory". /tmp/updm* exists: there is one /etc/tmp/updm<foo>, where <foo> is a random sequence, which is empty. /tmp/updmap.<pid>/[abde] exist; e is a copy of updmap.cfg, b is empty, and a and e contain lists of files. Both /etc/texmf/updmap.d/00updmap.cfg and /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg exist, and are basically the same. /etc/texmf/dvips contains quite a few files. I tried the postinst fix you suggested, but to no avail (sigh).
