The recommended way of changing pool_size etc.
is to create /etc/texmf/texmf.d/94mysize
(or whatever name you like but the numeral should
be smaller than 95 and larger than 85) which would
look like (for example)

pool_size = 1250000
hash_extra = 50000

then run "update-texmf" as root.  You will get your favarite
texmf.cnf now.
