I can't find such README.gz but there is
/usr/share/doc/tetex-extra/texmf/latex/revtex4/README.gz
Further, I can't find the following statement

in /usr/share/doc/tetex-extra/texmf/latex/revtex4/README.gz
What version is your tetex-extra ?
