Did you use Palatino (or Times or Helvetica)?
tx8r.enc seemed to be used by these fonts but the current
teTeX did not support these fonts. Please see
/usr/share/doc/texmf/fonts/txfonts/README.teTeX
/usr/share/doc/texmf/fonts/pxfonts/README.teTeX
And we Debian tetex maintainers do not add extra
stuffs to the upstream teTeX basically (except security
issue etc.).
Sorry but please add necessary files under
/usr/local/share/texmf
and run 'mktexlsr' then you can use pxfonts as before.
